As a dog parent, you probably wholeheartedly agree that dogs are considered family members. They never fail to bring joy into our lives, greet us with the sweet kisses, and even take on the role as our trusty bodyguard. No matter what happens, they always try their best to protect their homes and families.
While most dogs make excellent guard dogs by watching over the house, this 6-year-old dog named Jakey uses her perfect skills to protect something a bit unusual. She guards her family’s bread whenever they leave the house.
“She started this four years ago when we moved to our farm,” Katrina Frank, Jakey’s mom, told The Dodo. “Every time we would leave she would hide the bread.”
Whenever her family is away, she goes around the house to look for the plastic-wrapped loaf. Once she sniffs out it, she will do everything she can to make sure the bread is safe. If her mom doesn’t allow her to eat the bread, she will never take a bite. And she ensures that none of the other animals in her house do, either.
“We have a bread box so she likes to hop up and pull it out of there,” Frank said. “If I leave it in the pantry instead, she nudges the door open and gets it out. I’ve put it in the refrigerator before and she has opened the door to get to it.”
As soon as everyone returns, the pup leads them to the bread with a guilty face. “She likes to put it behind the couch and lay by it. Otherwise, [she puts it in] the closet in my bedroom,” Frank said. “I assume she thinks it’s the most important thing to us because we use it so often.”
Even when her family is out of bread, Jakey continues doing her job by guarding the other foods.“If I’m out of bread, she moves on to baked goods,” Frank said. “Once she took a Tupperware of cookies off the counter and hid all 17 individually without breaking any. She led me to all of them.”
Thanks to this cute bodyguard, the family’s food is always safe. For this reason, they are so proud of Jakey and her actions.
